The effect of clothing sunscreen is mainly determined by the sunscreen effect of the outer fabric used. The color, thickness, and density of fabrics are the three basic factors that affect sun protection. The darker and thicker the fabric, the denser the sunscreen is. Through other processes and finishing methods, sun protection effects can also be improved, such as adding special nano-particles (increasing reflection and scattering of ultraviolet rays) in the spinning of chemical fibers used in fabrics, or using UV finishing agents to treat fabrics or fabrics Finish the coating.

Regular clothing with special sun protection features will usually have a clear UPF value on the clothing label. The fabric's sun protection factor (UPF) shows the sunscreen strength of the textile, and the UPF value on the textile means that the textile can prolong the skin's multiple times in the natural state (without any protection) against UV radiation. The larger the UPF value, the better the UV radiation resistance to the skin.

Some countries and regions have successively introduced anti-UV test standards or certifications for textiles, such as Australia and New Zealand (AS/NZS 4399:1996), the United States (AATCC 183:1998), the United Kingdom (BS7914:1998), and China (GB/T 18830 ) and Europe (EN 13758-1) are both tested on new stretchless, dry textiles. The International Testing Association for Applied UV Protection, a non-governmental organization, also introduced the UV Standard 801 standard and certification. This test was conducted under the condition that the textiles were stretched and moistened, and based on the strongest UV and the most sensitive skin types. Compared with the above-mentioned national standards, the standard applies to a wide range of product types. The result can better reflect the actual state of the textile when it is used.

After obtaining UV Standard 801 certification, fabrics and clothing can be authorized to use special tags (pictured). With this logo, consumers can easily identify the genuine UV protection of the purchased product.
