The best part is that it looks just like real gold.†She often shops at a store near the Khalili market, where she finds affordable options that match her fashion sense without breaking the bank.
For many couples, "Chinese Gold" has become a practical solution for wedding traditions. In Egypt, it's customary for the groom to provide substantial gifts, often including gold or diamonds, to the bride. This financial pressure can be overwhelming for young people, leading many to opt for real gold only for wedding rings while using imitation gold for other ceremonial items.
Aza Riyad, a jewelry store owner in Cairo, has noticed the growing demand for "Chinese Gold." She recently opened a new shop and offers a ring for just 50 Egyptian pounds ($8) and a full set of jewelry—including bracelets, necklaces, and earrings—for 150 Egyptian pounds ($26). “These pieces don’t fade for two years,†she claims, highlighting their durability as a major selling point.
Even high-income individuals are drawn to "Chinese Gold" for its fashion-forward appeal. Fattai Fartas, a full-time housewife, said, “I wear it all the time. It lets me keep up with trends without spending a fortune.†Similarly, Sylvia Tammel, 43, bought a pair of earrings for just 30 Egyptian pounds ($5), noting that no one could tell they weren't real gold.
However, not everyone is convinced. Some still prefer real gold, particularly for significant gestures like marriage proposals. Others worry about the quality and safety of imitation jewelry. Dr. Falawi, a local jeweler, believes that "Chinese Gold" undermines the value of genuine gold, while Vasif Wasep is concerned about potential health risks from alloys containing nickel, which may cause allergic reactions in sensitive skin.
Despite these concerns, doctors note that while nickel can cause allergies, it's commonly used in costume jewelry worldwide, making "Chinese Gold" no more harmful than similar products elsewhere. As the demand continues to grow, the popularity of "Chinese Gold" in Egypt shows no signs of slowing down.
