Ashley and Emily from Frances Suzanne are back today, and we’re thrilled to have them stop by once again. You might recall their earlier visits when they shared their sewing projects inspired by a trip to Disney and a traditional technique known as tucks. This time around, they’re here to showcase their latest Oliver + S creations from the past year or so. Without further ado, here they are!
Hey there, Oliver + S fans! It’s wonderful to be back and sharing some of our recent sewing adventures with you. While “recent†might feel like a stretch these days, given that we took a bit of a hiatus from blogging for over a year, it wasn’t because we stopped sewing. Life just got in the way for a while. But now we’re ready to dive back in and share all the fun!
For those who don’t know us, we’re two sisters who sew exclusively for our younger sister’s three daughters—three lovely girls! We absolutely adore making unique garments for each of them, even if the oldest gets most of the hand-me-downs from her younger siblings. Oliver + S patterns are our go-to, and we have an entire section of our blog dedicated to showcasing our past projects.
During our blogging break, we ended up stockpiling projects and occasionally falling into what we call “pattern ruts.†It went something like this: 1) Sew something awesome. 2) Snap some pictures. 3) Save the post in our drafts folder. 4) Repeat. As we prepared to catch up, we realized we’d documented outfits for every single season.
Perfect timing, right? Especially since Oliver + S fans span the globe, and everyone experiences different climates throughout the year!
We recently wrapped up our spring/summer sewing lineup. Ugh, typing that feels bittersweet because we absolutely adore warm weather and creating cute outfits for it. Our oldest niece had expressed interest in learning to sew, so this summer seemed like the perfect opportunity to teach her. Cue the Popover Sundress pattern!
But wait, there’s more! The youngest niece spotted the Popover Sundress and insisted on one for herself… along with a matching doll-sized version. How could we say no?
The Ruffled Halter was another fantastic pattern to kick off the season. We always tweak it slightly by using a jump rope as the tie—it’s such a fun touch!
Speaking of the tried-and-true Jump Rope Dress, our youngest niece loved the latest floral iteration. She’s definitely a tough critic!
The Family Reunion Dress is another favorite of ours, and we made versions for both the oldest and middle nieces. The delicate tucks and topstitching never fail to impress. Liesl’s attention to detail is truly inspiring!
We attempted to add some heirloom detailing to a Badminton Dress, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite achieve the wow factor we were hoping for. Still, it turned out sweet enough to earn a place in our collection.
The Girl on the Go dress caught our eye last fall, but we hesitated due to the knit fabric and sizing. Eventually, curiosity got the better of us, and we finally gave it a try. Spoiler alert: we’ll definitely be sewing it again!
Our spring/summer “pattern rut,†if you will, became the Pinwheel Slip Dress. We initially sewed it as a dress, but after seeing a fellow sewist modify it into a top, we couldn’t resist trying it ourselves. Turns out, the nieces absolutely adore these tops!
Stop the presses! Why didn’t we think of this sooner? Quick to sew, minimal fabric usage, and the kids love them—that’s a win-win-win in our book. To mix things up, we paired the Pinwheel Tops with Class Picnic Shorts in various colors.
As temperatures dropped, we naturally turned our attention to fall/winter sewing. The Hide-and-Seek Tunic and Playtime Leggings were actually requested by the youngest niece after she outgrew her initial pair. They’re practically wardrobe staples at this point!
One of our absolute favorites, the Music Class Blouse + Skirt, made its way into our lineup. Liesl’s intricate details always leave us drooling!
For fall/winter, the Class Picnic Blouse became our go-to pattern. Easy to sew, budget-friendly, and the kids can’t get enough of them!
There’s always so much to share, but alas, time flies! We still have more to tell you about, including an entire collection of 18 Oliver + S garments (comprising 11 outfits) for our second round of Sewing for Disney. Stay tuned for those posts!
In the meantime, feel free to follow our sewing escapades on Instagram or Facebook. We’d love to connect with you and maybe even call you a sewing friend!
